AJAX Video Player
✓ A breeze to use on the front end and the back end✓ Super scalable content-wise and fantastically flexible development-wise
✓ Running strong for more than a year now as a major feature on Style.com
Client(s)
CondeNet, Vogue and Details (Style.com and Men.Style.com)
Opportunity
Style.com outsourced their video players and content management to an outside vendor that was an expert in helping companies first toe the waters of web video since being founded in 1999, but in 2007 they were in no shape to develop custom ad-ons as fast as their clients requested them.
Vogue.com, a subsidiary of Style.com, made one such request with a huge lost opportunity cost price tag (upwards of $250K over the next 60 days) if the modifications couldn't be developed and deployed within the two week deadline.
It was late November and Vogue needed this to land an extremely lucrative preroll ad campaign that would run for just two months over Holidays as a sponsorship package, meaning it didn't matter how many ad impressions were counted in the end, just that the campaign was displayed from one specific date through another without interruption.
In other words the project was of extreme urgency and importance to the client, Style.com, yet the vendor, Feedroom, claimed it would be very expensive and even worse - it would take at least a month to build and deploy.
I started thinking about what I could do to help then and there.
Solution
✓ Using a pen and paper I drew out how I thought the web app would look and behave
✓ Using Photoshop I created a design
✓ Using XHTML, CSS, and spliced up pieces of the .psd I created the initial DOM structure
✓ Using XML I created the data set
✓ Using JavaScript I loaded the XML, managed the UI and added a little animation for style
Technologies
AJAX, XHTML, CSS, XML, and JavaScript
