Opportunity
Technically speaking podcasting is really just blogging with audio or video files instead of text. Then that content gets displayed in iTunes and is made downloadable to an iPod or the like. At least this is from the point of view of the user.

Business wise (from the Publisher's point of view) podcasting means so much more including A.) a chance to seamlessly re-use existing content off-site, B.) a chance to create a great deal of value for advertisers through targeted video ad packages, C.) a chance to help market research efforts by sifting through comments from an objective audience, D.) a chance to further brand reach and audience engagement efforts through niche content offerings that are agile enough to easy react to user comments.

All in all it's a must have for any major media outlet moving forward, however it can be incredibly hard to monetize and here is why: Although Apple did an incredible job of building a solid bridge connecting Publishers to iPod owning interested viewers, their mission is to sell more hardware and not to capitalize on ad profit sharing relationships which is the business model of just about every other web video syndication partner.

What does all this mean? It means that Steve Jobs told publishers, we want your content but you are on your own with figuring out how to monetize it - which traditionally involves integrating ad serving, reporting, and inventory management systems.

I was tasked to lay the groundwork and then lead this initiative for two and a half years.
